Speckled Trout Spawn
Welcome to Frenzy Guide Service, your premier charter fishing business in Galveston, Texas. As May approaches, so does the annual spawning season of speckled trout in our waters. These fish arrive in large numbers to spawn, providing some of the best fishing opportunities of the year.
As a professional fisherman, I’ve spent some time researching our fish, and found some stuff that is pretty wild. Did you know that a single female speckled trout can produce up to 1 million eggs during the spawning season? That’s right, these fish are prolific breeders.
During spawning season, speckled trout can be found in a variety of locations, including around oyster reefs, sandbars, and grass flats. These areas provide suitable habitat for the eggs to develop and hatch into juvenile fish. Speckled trout eggs typically take about 2-4 weeks to hatch, depending on water temperature and other environmental factors.
As the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on small planktonic organisms (ya know, stuff that is smaller than they are) and gradually grow larger until they reach juvenile stage, where they start to feed on larger prey like shrimp, crabs, and small fish. The growth rate of juvenile speckled trout can vary depending on the availability of food and other environmental factors – the more they eat, the faster they grow.
May is pretty much open season on these fish, so we have a lot of flexibility in baits. We use a variety of baits and lures to target speckled trout, including live shrimp, mullet, and topwater lures.
